The highly anticipated film “Avante” made a powerful impression at its premiere on Sunday, March 29, 2026, at Jabi Lake Mall in Abuja, drawing strong reactions from the producer, industry veterans, and cast members—many of whom described it as a defining moment for Nigerian cinema.
Delivering the opening remarks, producer Engr. Kingsley Okafor described “Avante” as far more than entertainment, presenting it as a carefully crafted story rooted in history, humanity, and present-day realities.
He explained that the film blends themes of vengeance, love, and destiny, following a young man whose father is brutally killed alongside members of their community. Faced with deep loss and injustice, he and his siblings embark on a difficult path shaped by revenge and moral choices that test their character.
Though set in the early post-colonial period and written by an award-winning playwright, Okafor noted that the film’s message strongly reflects modern-day concerns—particularly around security.
Referencing Section 14(2) of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution, he stressed that the protection and welfare of citizens remain the government’s primary duty, adding that the story encourages viewers to reflect on the realities of insecurity and the consequences of abused authority.
He also raised concerns about situations where those entrusted with power misuse it, sometimes even enabling the crimes they are meant to prevent. Drawing on management principles, he emphasized that authority must always be matched with responsibility and accountability.
According to Okafor, the title “Avante”—a Spanish word meaning “forward”—symbolizes progress and the importance of learning from the past to build a better future.
He further revealed that casting for the film was based strictly on how well actors fit their roles rather than popularity, describing the approach as necessary to preserve the integrity of the story.
“At AfriSQure, we are committed to telling authentic stories that can stand the test of time,” he said, adding that while filmmaking may be straightforward, producing a truly impactful film requires immense effort and sacrifice.
The film received strong praise from veteran media personality Pa Peter Michael Piper, known for his work on “Tales by Moonlight,” who described it as one of the best Nigerian films he has ever seen.
He noted that the film stands out for its unpredictability, high-quality lighting, cinematography, sound design, and storytelling approach—qualities he believes set it apart from many productions in the industry.
Piper, who acknowledged losing interest in Nigerian films in the past, described “Avante” as a sign of renewal for the industry, suggesting it represents a significant turning point.
Other reactions echoed similar sentiments. Movie enthusiast Randy Halliday praised the film’s captivating scenes, realistic storytelling, and immersive soundtrack, describing it as both visually and emotionally engaging.
Cast member Eddie Walker also expressed pride in being part of the project, highlighting its strong production quality across multiple elements, including graphics, costumes, and overall setting. He encouraged audiences to watch the film when it begins screening in cinemas nationwide from April 3, 2026.
