I might not be an expert, but I know a little about communication. Over the decades, CAN has always been very careful with its choice of words whenever the body is issuing statements over killings of its members. It has always been careful not to aggravate matters and it has always refrained from putting the blame on government. Now, when CAN starts saying something about “perceived official endorsement” of killings, Nigerians have every reason to be worried.
Personally, I still cannot understand the attitude of President Buhari to religious and sectarian killings in this country. To say the least, it is bizarre! How could killings be going on in a country and the leader keeps mute? Not even in a heterogeneous society like ours. No word of condemnation against the perpetrators. No statement commiserating with the bereaved. No words of courage for the displaced. No message of sympathy for the injured. No missive of solidarity for the victims. All we hear is a loud silence of indifference.
And to worsen it all, a shame of a presidential spokesman told a bewildered nation that since there was a state governor, Buhari’s Napoleon could play on the ostrich while our Rome is consumed in conflagration. My shock is that we have a president that will never miss a chance to condemn same acts in other countries. In Turkey, France, Germany, Syria and so on. Buhari has issued strongly worded statements condemning attacks and sectarian violence.
I have known Femi Adesina since 2004. Even to the point of his having his numbers (provided his has not changed them) I think he has been nothing short of disaster. He is a living vindication of those who say journalists are not the best communication managers. I, Samuel Ajayi, can NEVER be a media aide to a president who condemns killings in other countries but keeps mute when such happen in his own country. I will rather resign than endorse such insensitive position. At times, we should learn to value our conscience and relationship with God than the influence and money a position guarantees us.
And all those who blamed every religious crisis and killings on the “clueless” Jonathan should bury their empty heads in shame and seek forgiveness from God. Who are you blaming now? Maybe we should blame the victims themselves. I have never been a religious bigot and will never be. But I think Christians who were blaming Jonathan then (but have lost their voices now) are a disgrace to their religion!
I think the blood of the dead is more on you than the president. Perhaps, you may need to read what James 4, verse 17 says…
