German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, said that Berlin is supporting the elected government in Ankara.

At about 8.50pm on Friday, 15th July 2016, a group of military men staged a coup in Turkey overnight Saturday. They officially declared a coup and martial law, saying In a television broadcast that, “Turkish Armed Forces have completely taken over the administration of the country to reinstate constitutional order, human rights and freedoms, the rule of law and the general security that was damaged. All international agreements are still valid. We hope that all of our good relationships with all countries will continue.”

Gunshots were heard all over in the Turkish capital of Ankara as military jets and helicopters were seen flying overhead. Both of Istanbul’s bridges across the Bosphorus, the strait separating the European and Asian sides of the city, were reportedly closed to traffic.

Sky News reported that, there were also reports that police guarding the presidential palace had been disarmed.

It was also reported that the country’s top general, General Hulusi Akar, “has been taken hostage by a group in the military who attempted an uprising,” at military Headquarter

All flights from Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport were also reportedly canceled.

Citizens quickly trooped out up to 10.20 pm for last minute withdrawal at ATM centers close to their residences.

Sources close to the president alerted Turkish that the president is safe and secure, urging those who are loyal to fight the rebels to stand still. Adding that it was a few disgruntled elements within the military that are stirring the insurrection to destabilize the democratically-elected government.

A couple of minutes after 10pm, Barrack Obama was alerted, which was confirmed by Ned Price, The National Security Council Spokesman for the White House in his brief statement that, “The president’s national security team has apprised him of the unfolding situation in Turkey,” said National Security Council spokesman Ned Price.

At about 11.30 pm, the president, Erdogan, established contact with CNN and granted interviewing as his first speech saying he does not believe the coup will be successful and urged people to take to the streets to protest against what he described as a “coup attempt by a minority faction within the military”, He also added that he “never believed in a power higher than the power of the people.”

From 12.05 am people trouped out and took to the street waving Turkish flag in solidarity with the democratically-elected government of president, Erdogan and as protest against the military coup. Several of the civilians were reported killed. Some of the protesters took their lives in their hands as they stood in front of armored tanks s, with some flat on the ground.

At 12.38 am NTV reported that, Turkish fighter jets shot down a military helicopter over the capital Ankara that was being used by plotters attempting a coup.

The Turkish PM, Binali Yildirim, made a statement at about 1.00 am assuring that the situation was already “largely under control”. Adding also that the military chief of staff and commanders are in full control.

Turkish state broadcaster TRT was back on air with those loyal to the president taking over at about 1.02 am.

Some rebels soldiers were arrested with so many willingly surrendering. CNN-Turk showed visual of massive number of soldiers with their hands up walking among tanks in Istanbul’s Bosporus Bridge as sign that they have surrendered to government loyal troupes.

At exactly 2.03 am the NTV showed the Turkish President, Erdogan, at the Istanbul airport spotted among massive crowd of his supporters outside, been hailed as having been victorious. He said no power is above the national will and warning that those involved in the uprising will get necessary response, no matter what institution they are from. Concluding that “They have pointed the people’s guns against the people. The president, whom 52 percent of the people brought to power, is in charge. This government brought to power by the people, is in charge. They won’t succeed as long as we stand against them by risking everything.” He urged his supporters to remain on the streets until their is full normalcy.

At 2.22 am The Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, personally addressed the media telling the citizens that “his government is in charge after a coup attempt brought a night of explosions, air battles and gunfire across the capital that at least 60 dead and at least 150 people wounded.” He described what happened as an act of treason which those responsible will pay a heavy price. Concluding that the uprising will be a reason to clean up the army.

As at 5.00 am bombing still continued on Turkey’s parliament as rebel soldiers have been warned they will be shot down if they attempt to use more military aircraft.

The rebel sent an email calling themselves the “Peace at Home” movement insisting that they will fight on.

As at the time of filing this report the death toll from the attempted coup by Turkish rebel soldiers has risen to 161 with 1,440 people reportedly wounded according to Prime Minister Yildirim.

And General Umit Dundar said in on TV that “The coup attempt has been foiled,” and 1,563 soldiers who had taken part in the coup had been arrested.

The EU Minister, Omer Celik declared that the government (of Turkey) has the coup situation “90 percent under control.” He however added that some military commanders are still being held hostage by the plotters.

Dead bodies of rebel soldiers litter the street. And abandoned stationary tanks are taken over by President Erdogan’s supporters who are chanting his name, celebrating his victory.

REACTIONS

Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary-General called for calm. He said that the UN is seeking to clarify the situation.

Barack Obama, US President, said, “all parties in Turkey should support the democratically-elected government of Turkey, show restraint, and avoid any violence or bloodshed”.

German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, said that Turkey’s democracy must be respected and asserted that Berlin is supporting the elected government in Ankara.

Steffen Seibert, the spokesman of Merkel said on Twitter “The democratic order in Turkey must be respected. Everything needs to be done to protect human lives.”
