The Youth Wing of Southern Kaduna Peoples Union (SOKAPU), the major umbrella body for ethnic nationalities in the southern part of Kaduna state rose from a stakeholders meeting on Saturday, 23rd July, 2016 to issue a stern warning to Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai (of the APC) to avoid taking the law into his hand as he is so desperate to demolish Gbagyi Villa, the only 100% Christian community with about 4,000 structures in Kaduna metropolis.
The meeting was held as the aftermath of El-Rufai’s visit to Gbagyi Villa and his vow to demolish the entire community despite the subsisting court interlocutory injunction and the matter still pending before a court of competent jurisdiction.
“Why must a sitting governor call an entire community ‘criminals’ just because he wanted to ‘condemn’ them in order to destroy their properties?” The angry youths asked. They also inquired if El-Rufai has turned himself to a court, because according to them even if he is accusing the people of Gbagyi Villa of any “crime” an accused is presumed innocent until he/she is tried, given opportunity for fair hearing and found guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction. “This is defamation of character as we have always been peaceful including when he visited.”
The angry youths condemned the planned action in its totality, wondering why El-Rufai will be so bent on destroying an entire community after claiming to have heard from the management of the Federal Polytechnic alone. Even if there is a misunderstanding between the Polytechnic and Gbagyi Villa, as a father of the state, he is supposed to hear from the two sides before drawing conclusion. “Till today he has not granted any representative of the community audience. Even when he visited he only spoke with the Polytechnic management.”
On his own part, the National Youth Coordinator of SOKAPU, Comrade Nasiru Jagaba who spoke to Arise News correspondent after the meeting organized by the group asserted that, “it is obvious the governor wants blood, as he is so desperate to go ahead with the demolition plan.”
He then warned that if even one building was touched, the situation could get ugly. The youths cheered his comments to express their assertion.
He also added, “I pray this issue can be addressed peacefully because we love our state, so we can go about our duties without fear. If anything happens, it would take us years back from the gains we have made at ensuring peace,”
The youths concluded by urging the governor to give peace a chance, saying “his action might degenerate into unpalatable consequences that may affect the peaceful co-existence currently being enjoyed.”
