Arise News247 gathered that the Senate has advised the National Primary Health Care Development Agency and other relevant bodies to verify the claim of Prof. Maduike Ezeibe, a researcher in Veterinary Medicine at the Michael Okpara University, who announced that he has discovered cure for HIV/AIDS.
This was disclosed by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Primary Healthcare, Communicable and Non Communicable Diseases, Senator. Mao Ohuabunwa during the budget defence for the agency in Abuja, on Tuesday 14th February, 2017.
In the same vein the Senator also condemned the way and manner in which the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) and Nigeria Centre for Disease Control dismissed the claim by the Professor.
The Senator categorically and fundamentally asserted that,
“It is not a matter of his identity, he is a serving professor in a known institution, invite him if he had followed the scientific procedure.
“It will be a thing of pride that today a professor, a citizen of Nigeria is developing a cure, nothing is impossible even as he is a veterinary doctor.
“Coming out with a disclaimer immediately is not the right thing,” he maintained.
In defending the agency, Dr Faisal Shuaib, the Executive Secretary of the agency insisted that they were satisfied with the stance of NACA and the Centre for Disease Control. He further stated that, they “are aware of the claim by the professor that he had found a cure for HIV/AIDS.
“Just like the Centre for Disease Control and NACA came out to issue a disclaimer that it is not correct, as an agency we align with the positions of these agencies that are based on scientific evidence,” he objected.
He also added that the Professor failed to follow the laid down rigorous processes for testing the findings of any claim for cure of any disease.
Shuaib concluded that even his claim to have cured 10 patients could not be verified: “There are huge doubts whether the claims are true or not,” he concluded.
